Whats Brewing after a year

A year ago, I did not know if anyone would walk in for a coffee. I ground the beans anyway. I boiled the kettle, wrote the first article, and hit publish with the particular kind of hope you feel when you cannot yet tell whether the room is empty or full.

Twelve months on, the café is warm, the conversation is better than I dared imagine, and the kettle has barely had time to cool.

Where this started

ConsultantCafe began as what I called my surrogate book — the living version of a book I had wanted to write for years and kept talking myself out of. English is my second language, and for a long time I let a handful of critics convince me I could not really write. Hitting publish that first time was daunting. I did it anyway, because I had finally made peace with something: I write well enough, and more importantly, I write with purpose. That purpose was simple — to share the lessons consultants usually learn the hard way. The practical stuff, the human stuff, the things that help you feel more capable and a little less alone in the work.

A year and more than fifty articles later, the surrogate book has turned into something better than the one I had planned, because it is being written with you, week by week. The vision has not changed. I still imagine a consulting world where:

Success is defined by growing into the best version of yourself. A world where consultants feel strong, skilled, and proud of the careers they are building, and where firms are better for it too.

If anything, it has grown more aspirational:

Helping consultants build remarkable careers, and for my corporate subscribers, growing the careers that grow your firm.

To the people who pulled up a chair

To my individual subscribers — the consultants, contractors, project managers and career-changers who open the emails, reply with your own stories, and turn up to Cafe Shot Master Class sessions, thank you. You turned a personal writing habit into something that actually feels like a café. You are the reason I can keep brewing the good stuff.

And to my Corporate Special Blend subscribers (particularly Forge Advisory and EOLAS Solutions), thank you for backing this in a bigger way. You did not just subscribe; you invited me in to help your teams build capability in a practical, sustainable, human way. Trusting a small Australian business with your people is not something I have taken for granted for a single day.

A year of Café Shot Master Classes

One of the things I am proudest of is that ConsultantCafe never became just a library of articles. It became a community.

The Café Shot Master Classes have grown into a monthly fixture, a chance to compare notes, pressure-test ideas, and get a bit stronger in company rather than alone at a desk. What began for Corporate subscribers is now open to paid individual subscribers too, and facilitating those sessions and the workshops for Special Blend teams has been some of the most rewarding work of my year.

A very surprising night

In May, ConsultantCafe won the Breakthrough Business Award. If the audience feedback is to be believed, I looked completely stunned when our name was called. I am still a little chuffed, and still a little embarrassed by the fuss. It recognises an idea that only works because people believed in it early, so thank you for the trophy on the shelf. It has your fingerprints all over it.

The look and feel — thanks to Sas

You have probably noticed ConsultantCafe looking more and more like…us. The person behind that is Saskia Day — Sas — who I think of as ConsultantCafe's first team member. She started with customer journey maps that captured our personas with almost unfair accuracy, and she has been shaping the brand and the whole feel of the place ever since. If the café looks warmer and more like somewhere you would actually want to sit, that is Sas.

It still feels like the beginning

The strange thing about our first birthday: it still feels like the beginning. More playbooks are on the way, building on the Change Management Playbook and Capability Map already in your hands. The fabled cards are still coming, and I promise they are worth the wait. And watch out for the Triple Shot campaign.

What you read the most

If you want to know what has been on consultants' minds this year, look at what you clicked most. Read together, they sketch a profession that is a little anxious, a little tired, and still deeply committed to doing good work.

So, You Found Yourself on the Bench
The bench isn’t career purgatory, it’s consulting’s most honest mirror—and your biggest accelerator if you use it right. Off the field is where you sharpen skills, build relationships, and create IP. Play offence across the 4 Cs—Consultant, Clients, Colleagues, Community—and you’ll be first pick.
My Consulting Capability Map you can download
This one-page capability map brings together 39 capability areas and 172 supporting elements across the full system of consulting to help you build your career with intention.
Timesheets Without Tears: How to Make Them Work for You
Timesheets are necessary commercial hygiene in consulting, but they also reveal culture. Done well, they’re quick and useful; done poorly, they steal Fridays.

And my favourite article.....

Should you fake it ’till you make it?
Fake it ’till you make is like fabricating it till you fluke it. Feel your way forward instead. Six practical moves when label on the tin is bigger than the tin itself.

Thank you, again

A good brew takes time, patience, and more adjustments than you would care to admit. This first year has had all three.

Thank you for being part of it. Thank you for supporting my work. Thank you for letting me help, in the small ways that matter to you. It still feels like the beginning — and honestly, I hope it always does.

The kettle is on. The ideas are still percolating. And I am already looking forward to the next cup with you.
