Some Of My Personal Ideas To Disrupt and Reinvent Consulting
Disruptive ideas to reinvent consulting, from open IP, expert swarms to mutuals, that challenge the unwritten rules of consulting.
To me, disruption starts when someone breaks a long-held assumption or rule. A “this is how it’s done” that no one has questioned for a long time. The trigger might be new technology, a different business model, or a clearer view of what customers value.
Early versions rarely impress incumbents. They are often simpler, cheaper, or more convenient. That is why they are dismissed until its perhaps too late. They improve quickly. While established players focus on refining the current model, the basis of competition changes.
Innovation is different. Innovation improves what already exists. A better product. A better process. A smarter service. It fits within existing industry rules. Money is made the same way. Customers stay largely the same. In my view, consulting firms are incredibly good at reading the tea leaves to move with the market, but generally, I would say they rarely break from long-held traditions and unspoken rules.
So, for what it is worth, here are some disruptive and innovative ideas for my paid subscribers. Some may feel they are too radical. That is fine.
The point is to spark something in you and your organisation that could actually work.
I have had a lot of fun playing with these ideas over time. Some build on other people’s thinking. Some are ideas I have been turning over in my own mind for years.
Take them, argue with them, stretch them with your colleagues.
And hey, if you adopt one of these and become a squillionaire, come back to Consultant Café and tell us about it. Then buy me a coffee. Or if you like, donate a large sum of money so I can rewild some land for the flora and fauna (a hint at one of my dreams).
